AS1-T2-In-camera editing

In camera editing is a way editing videos, filmmakers will video the scenes in which order they wish to see the video, this is very risky as you do not post camera editing and everything needs to run smoothly from the first shot, this is why many filmmakers do not like the idea of in camera editing. However this technique was used in early cinema , as many didn't use splicing, which was putting two clips together, this technique was mainly used by George Melies which was portrayed in 1896 in the film called 'The vanishing lady, as shown below.

In the video that my group created whilst using in camera editing, which is the video above. There were many different shots, that we used. In the first shot we had David walk down the stairs, we then continued this in the next shot by positioning the camera at the bottom of the stairs and had David walk down the second set of stairs.

In the next shot we positioned the camera outside the build as we made it look like after David had walked down the stairs he had left the building as we filmed him walking outside the building doors. This made it look like a continuation of the previous shot.

In the next shot i am introduced as i walk around the corner to meet david, we then engage in some dialogue and discuss where we are going to go , we then agree where we are gonna go and then walk towards the destination. We then walk towards the destination and walk around the corner.

In the next shot we make it continuos by positioning the camera behind me and david walking down the sidewalk , this then creates the effect that both shots are related as it is continued. We then walk down towards the nd of the side walk.

The next shot is in the opposite direction around the corner from the end of the side walk, in this shot you see me and David walk around the corner from the sidewalk, which suggests

AS1-T1-Editing In Early Cinema

Editing has developed in many ways in the early stages film making and has many individuals tat edited their films in different ways to good effect.

One example of filmmakers using editing in the early stages of cinema are Porter and Edison. They developed the early stages of film making as they made their films longer than most other films, also they came up with the idea of having a plot and action, this was shown in the film 'Life of an American' .
They also used the first close up as they showed a hand pulling a fire alarm. Also Porter beieved hat you didnt have to show the person 's whole body in every shot, as he thought it was unnecessary . Finally they created the idea that splicing together two shots together, which would therefore create a relationship between the two in the veiwers mind. Also the 35 mm film strip was created which become the defualt to use on films , therefore it has had a massive influence as they are still being used to this very day. Plus the projector was also developed which allowed the movies to be played and displayed for people to watch it.

Further more the Lumiere brothers were also filmakers that used editing to develop the early stages of cinema. The Lumiere brothers produced very short films that were very static, they also used unnecessary motion as they sometimes just showed traffic moving which wasnt effective at all, this was shown in the film ' Sortie d'usine' in 1895.

Moreover G.A.Smith is also another filmmakers who used editing to develop early cinema. Hiwever firstly he did not use editing at all in his films and let them run all the way through, an example of when this happens is in the film ' The Miller and The Sweep'. However further along in time he did use editing, as he was to of claimed one of the first films using narrative editing, which is too create a story, this was portrayed in 1899 in the film ' The Kiss In The Tunnel'.

In addition George Melies was another filmkaers that used editing which developed early cinema. He used many camera tricks which are still used today. Also he built a studio , worte scripts and designed sets for films. He also discovered stop motion , hwoever this was said to be luck as the camera broke down for a second, and therefore stop motion was created. Also in 1886 he used in-camera editing, which is portrayed in the film ' the Vanishing Lady' which was rleeased in 1896.

However his films were dismissed when seen as he didnt use close ups or long shots.
Another example of filmakers using editing in the early stages of cinema is Charles Pathe. He developed the early stages of film in his film 'The Horse That Bolted' in 1907, he done this by using the techniquye called parallel editing, which means to cut between two different storylines, these being the horse and the delivery man.

Finally D.W.Griffith was another filmakers who used editing to develop cinemas, he used the technique of cross cutting which was to show the same action in different locations by using different camera angles. This then influenced many other filmakers nto editing and helped them to understand it.
